或パーティの席で、ドイツとロシアの士官がおり、ドイツの士官が明石にフランス語で「貴官はドイツ語ができますか」と聞いてきた。元二郎は「フランス語がやっとです」とわざと下手なフランス語で答えた。すると、そのドイツの士官は元二郎を無視して、ドイツ語でロシアの士官と重要な機密について話し始めた。ドイツの士官にすればドイツ語がわかるはずがないと考えたのであろう。然し元二郎はドイツ語は完璧に理解しており、その機密をすべて聞いてしまったという。元二郎はフランス語、ロシア語、英語も完璧に理解していた
